Does your website look like Medusa without makeup after a night on the tiles?
Or does it stop visitors dead in their tracks with its beauty but leaves them scratching their heads because they don’t know what it is you’re supposed to be selling?
Or do you have a website at all?
Do you think the whole “online thing” is just a scam to relieve you of your hard earned money?
Well, if you fall into any of these categories I’m here to let you in on a little secret.
It’s an unfortunate fact that while most web design will confuse, amaze, bore to death, astonish and make some even recoil in horror but it will never sell very much of anything.
In fact, the same is true for most advertising and marketing in general.
I’m not quite sure where it all started, but I suspect it was when Madison Avenue “creative” types were let loose amongst those who sought to sell, somewhere around the fifties.
Since then any actual selling has mostly taken a backseat in marketing, with the emphasis on being cute, clever, catchy, avant-garde or funny.
And this “disease” has infected the web with gusto.
Tell me this, would you send Krusty The Klown out to meet with those hot new leads that just landed on your desk?
What about a Parisian performance artist to close that mega 6-figure deal?
Or would you send Vincent Van Gogh door-to-door to sell your product ?
I doubt it.
Well aside from not being able to hear very well because he was missing an ear, the guy couldn’t sell a thing!
But that’s what every business out there are doing with their websites.
Sending “Van Gogh” out to sell their product.
I don’t know about you, but sending a one-eared artist out to sell doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.
But you might as well be doing that when your website values artistry over industry.
The good news for you, a savvy business owner, is by having a “direct response” web site for your business you give yourself an “unfair advantage” over your competition.
While they’re digging in the dirt with designs that couldn’t sell a starving man a steak, any visitor to a direct response designed website like yours will be under no illusions as to why they should do business with you.
They’ll know exactly what you’re all about, and how you’re able to solve their problems.
You’ll be able to demonstrate clearly that you understand their true needs and wants, are able to offer them the solution and tell them in clear and exact terms what they do need to do next.
It could be to reach for their wallet to take their credit card out to purchase your product.
Or it could be to pick up the phone to place an order, get more information or arrange an appointment.
Whatever the outcome, it will be designed in such a way to convert as many prospects as possible.
But it won’t be for every business.
Listen – it’s quite possible this may be too aggressive an approach for some companies.
Maybe you’re used to a softly-softly approach to selling.
Well, there’s nothing wrong with not wanting to sell, I guess..
And for whatever reason profits aren’t every businesses cup of tea either.
I’m not sure why exactly, but there’s nowt as queer as folk as they say..
But if you are serious about generating more money and saving time in your business you need to embrace direct response marketing web design.
